Clarinetist Duy Tran performs the first movement of Jonathan Leshnoff’s Clarinet Concerto on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at 7:30pm at the Reed L. Buffington Theater in Hayward, CA with the Chabot College Wind Symphony.
From Duy Tran:
Your concerto has this spiritual connection with me and I wanted to learn it! The "Nekudim" description is very similar to the Vietnamese language, my second language, where a subtle marking of the vowel changes the intonation and meaning of the word. I can illustrate for you with the Vietnamese word "ma", which means ghost with không "nothing" point but the other points (ngang "flat", huyền "deep", hỏi "asking", ngã "tumbling", or sắc "sharp") on the vowel "a" can dramatically change the pitch and meaning:
I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area after completing my training in Philadelphia. For this spring on May 3rd, I will get an opportunity to perform the first movement of your Clarinet Concerto with the Chabot Wind Symphony under Timothy Harris at the Chabot College Buffington Performing Arts Center in Hayward, CA.
Thank you so much for writing this beautiful piece of music for the clarinet!
